CANTON Dog park updateS:

Dog Park Member Update as of March 20, 2023: Good news! The Canton Dog Park is now open! Please be advised that we are still experiencing some muddy conditions so come prepared with towels for cleanup. For additional information, please contact the Canton Parks office at 734/394-5310.

Dog Park Member Update as of February 23, 2023:  As a reminder, starting March 1st, the Canton Dog Park will be implementing a rotating usage schedule to help combat the extremely muddy ground conditions that inevitably develop this time of year. New section signage has already been installed to help avoid possible confusion regarding section usage. The section designations are as follows:  the large dog section that is currently open will now be Area A; the current closed large dog middle section will now be known as Area B; and the current small dog section will now be Area C.
To minimize potential dog park closures, a rotating schedule that is based on dog size will be implemented until ground conditions improve.
Starting on Wednesday, March 1, the following rotating schedule will go into effect:

  • Large dogs will have access to Area A of the dog park on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday and may utilize Area C on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
  • Small dogs will have access to Area A on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and may utilize Area C on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
  • Area B will remain closed until optimum turf conditions have been reached

Staff arrived at this decision, based on the overwhelming consensus that was shared by a majority of Dog Park members. This rotating schedule will be an intermittent solution as our staff begins working with the Canton Engineering division to address the drainage issues to determine a long-term resolution.  This drainage project is expected to start in late summer.

In addition, Canton Parks staff have inspected the dog park fences and have and have made any necessary repairs.

Due to the expected wear and tear in all sections, intermittent closures may still occur based on ground conditions to help better preserve the turf.

This rotating schedule will be a self-policing procedure, where all dog owners are responsible for the actions and conduct of their animals and themselves at all times when in the park.

Please note that once the drainage problems have been addressed and after Area B has re-opened, staff will re-evaluate the need for the continuation of this new rotation schedule.

As always, Canton Parks reserves the right to close the Dog Park at any time to minimize turf damage, as well as for routine maintenance. For more information, please contact the Canton Parks office at 734/394-5310.

Previous IMPORtant Updates

Taking into consideration feedback brought to our attention in past months, several improvements have been planned for the park in 2020.  As part of the site improvement plan, the Large Dog section has been divided into two sections with the addition of fencing and a new section access gate. This restructuring has enabled Park staff to rotate these sections in an effort to mitigate the damage caused by large dogs due to their size and physicality of play in these high-use areas, as well as to allow for turf protection and restoration. Please visit the Canton Dog Park Facebook page or keep checking back here for all Dog Park updates.

In addition to the reconfiguration of the large dog area, other site improvements and new rules will be implemented in 2020, including:

  • The addition of three new water fountains that will result in one dedicated water source located in each dog section.
  • Additional waste stations will be installed to allow for proper disposal of fecal droppings.
  • Fence and gate repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the year; weather permitting.
  • The Dog Park will now be closed every Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to allow for weekly maintenance.
  • To help eliminate the spread for illness and diseases, no shallow water pools will be allowed in the Dog Park.
  • All members will be responsible for filling holes created by their pets.  Buckets of sandy-top soil and scoops will be available in each section to facilitate addressing these lawn repairs.

Dog Park members are reminded to review the Park Rules and Regulations located below , to remain up-to-date on how to best use the park and make the most of your visits. For the safety of all, members are asked to please respect and abide by all rules, since this is a self-regulated community Dog Park.
